University of California Health Equity in Medicine Fellowship

The Health, Equity, Action, and Leadership (HEAL) Initiative is a community-focused organization that trains and transforms front-line health professionals to serve resource-denied communities. HEAL believes health is a human right and works to increase access to quality healthcare around the world through centering equity, justice, and solidarity for vulnerable populations. Through global and local programs, HEAL empowers interdisciplinary healthcare professionals to address the needs of resource-denied communities globally, including California, Mexico, Southwest Indigenous communities, and East Africa.

Role Description
This is an immersive one year Social Medicine Fellowship with the UCSF HEAL Initiative partner site in Riverside, California. We are looking for US-trained physicians who are passionate about health equity in California and are looking for mentorship and training post-residency to grow their skills and network to best serve the underserved.

Fellowship Components

  • The 1-year fellowship immerses you in partner clinics and organizations getting to the root cause of the health determinants  of California’s resource-denied communities
  • You will receive mentorship from UC faculty and local clinical health experts who are values-aligned and passionate about health equity and are invested in career paths committed to addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). 
  • Spend 70% of your time working clinically and have 30% paid protected time to focus on structured project work addressing prominent health needs of the local communities such as addiction medicine and refugee care. 
  • To provide you with the tools and framework to best serve the communities you’re immersed in, you’ll receive intensive training and curriculum on health equity, structural determinants of health, and leadership  
  • From public health researchers in Mexico to physicians in the Navajo Nation, when you join the California HEAL program, you have access to HEAL’s engaged community of 200+ diverse healthcare specialists for support and collaboration opportunities
  • Option to sign up for a 2nd year and spend time at an international partner site. 
  • A possible faculty track at a University of California campus

Qualifications

  • US-trained physician
  • Completed residency by the start of the fellowship (July 2025) in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Medicine-Pediatrics
  • Passion for serving California's resource-denied communities
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a benefit
  • We are ideally looking for early-career physicians interested in pursuing a medical career centered around health equity and who could benefit from mentorship and training to support them in this endeavor
